Improving self-confidence in patients who are dissatisfied with their current appearance; rhinoplasty is a popular plastic surgery procedure. Sought after by renowned personalities and referred to by some of the country's most recognized plastic surgeons. Dr. Schroeder has helped hundreds of patient both locally and internationally to achieve a proportional, aesthetically pleasing nasal contour.
Rhinoplasty is typically performed on an outpatient basis under IV sedation or general anesthesia and generally takes about one to two hours, depending on the type of enhancement being performed.
Dr. Schroeder generally practices one of two techniques when performing rhinoplasty. In a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made within the nostrils. In an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made across the columella, (the tissue between the nostrils.) During both methods, surrounding tissues covering the nose will be lifted, while sculpting nasal bone and cartilage to the desired shape. In augmentation cases of the nose, additional cartilage/bone will often times be taken from the septum.
Adjustments of the septum and the inner structures of the nose to improve breathing will be performed for patients with a deviated septum. Surrounding tissues are re-draped and stitched closed with dissolving stitches. If nostril reshaping was discussed, this part of the procedure is done at the final stage of rhinoplasty.
Patients need to allow a reasonable amount of time to relax and heal following surgery, usually one to two weeks is recommended. Typically patients experience puffiness, dull headache or nose aches, as well as mild to severe swelling, bruising, bleeding or stuffiness. Most patients will begin to feel better within a few days following surgery. Patients can often times return to work in about one to two weeks, but should avoid exercise and any strenuous activities for a minimum of four to six weeks. Contact lenses can be worn immediately following your surgery, however glasses may need to be taped to the forehead or propped up on the cheeks for the first several weeks following surgery.
Rhinoplasty results gradually increase as days and weeks pass following surgery as the swelling recedes. In the first year after surgery, it is not uncommon to experience recurring swelling from time to time, depending on weather and seasonal conditions. Typically this type of swelling will be more noticeable in the morning hours and decrease throughout the daytime.
Rhinoplasty results depend on the patient's cartilage structure, nasal bone, facial shape, age and skin thickness. Dr Schroeder considers all of these factors when meeting with you to determine a fully individualized procedure to help you obtain the precise results of your dream.
